- "Good medium amber-edge red.
Flamboyant aromas of smoked meat, leather, truffle and
burnished oak. Intensely flavored and penetrating, with
strong acids giving the flavors terrific cut and grip. I
get an impression of strong cabernet tannins. Drink now
through 2020. 94. My second bottle showed even more
extravagantly expressive aromas of hot stones, tobacco,
minerals and marzipan; a denser, silkier palate
impression, with more obvious roasted Graves character;
and an uncanny combination of sheer sweetness with
structure and grip." |

Shiraz |

2003 - RP 94 |
|
The 2003 Shiraz is a
full-bodied, opulently-styled red that smells of creme de
cassis and blackberry liqueur intermixed with smoky meats,
espresso roast, jammy black fruits, licorice, earth, and
toasty new oak. It should evolve nicely for a decade or
more.
Full-throttle Shiraz are fashioned by winemaker Kim Johnston
from vineyards owned by the Longbottom family. This is an
unabashed, flamboyant, Aussie wine that is loaded with
fruit, fragrance, glycerin, and intensity. This is the type
of wine that Eurocentric wine tasters and condescending
elitists tend to dismiss, but it is a fascinating effort the
likes of which are made nowhere else in the world. There is
certainly no shortage of flavor, and if you like your wines
exuberant, flamboyant, and over-sized, this wine fills the
tab, and then some. (Wine Advocate) |

Shiraz |

2005 -
Wine Spectator 94 - A
big wine, but with a graceful style. Shows plenty of muscle,
with ripe plum and blackberry fruit shaded by hints of
tobacco, cedar and oaky spice. Wears it all well and is
beautifully balanced through the long, expressive finish.
Best from 2008 through 2016. 500 cases made. –HS
Robert Parker - 91 points - A brilliant cuvee, the 2004
Shiraz Rossco’s Vineyard sees 20% new and 80% used American
oak. A flamboyant perfume of blackberries, espresso roast,
white chocolate, plums, and licorice precedes a full-bodied,
chewy, intense wine with supple tannin as well as loads of
glycerin, extract, and richness. It possesses 15% alcohol.
Drink it over the next 7-10 years. |

Spectator: "Open-throttle Cabernet; bold, rich and polished,
with layers of currant, wild berry, blackberry and jazzy
coconut- and vanilla-scented oak. The tannins are firm and
intense, with a touch of leather peeking through on the
finish. Drink now through 2012." (05/05) K&L's notes - The
Hollywood & Vine 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested from
four distinctive, ultra-premium vineyard locations. A blend of
Cabernet vineyards on Mt. Veeder, Atlas Peak, the historic JJ
Cohn Estate in Rutherford, and the pedigreed Davis Station in
Oakville combine the best of steep hillside structure with the
opulent fruit intensity of the mid-valley benchland vineyards.
Fermented on skins for approximately three weeks, then
transferred to barrels (60% new French oak). The wine was aged
in small oak for approximately 21 months. This baby displays
an abundance of ripe blackberry and black currant aromas,
bright plums, sweet vanilla and cocoa tones. The palate
texture is bright, rich and mouth-filling, with fresh fruit
flavors. |

- Ripe and succulent, with a vanilla
note weaving through the blackberry, currant and sweet spice
flavors that mingle effortlessly on the seamless finish.
Impressive for its balance and power-in-reserve. Drink now.

Wine Enthusiast
- Starts off rather spicy and peppery,
fills the midpalate with modest blackberry fruit, then
closes with a blast of vanilla-laden oak. This is a
medium-bodied, savory offering that blends of a couple of
old-vine parcels from Barossa's Tanunda subregion. Drink

Robert Parker: "The 2004 Entity (100% Shiraz) is even more
profound than the Plexus. Its opaque purple color is
accompanied by a magical, sweet creme de cassis, blackberry,
camphor, espresso roast, and subtle wood-scented perfume. A
fabulous attack, voluptuous, full-bodied mid-palate,
multi-layered texture and finish suggest this brilliant
Shiraz should drink beautifully for 12-15+ years." (10/06)

not heavy. It picks up a floral note as the open-textured
finish sails on and on... Best from 2008 through 2015. 750

2005 - Wine Advocate 98 points! -
"As good as the preceding wines may be- they pale in the
shadow of the 2005 Shiraz "Old Bastard-" sourced from a
114-year-old vineyard- and which spent 22 months in new
and one-year-old French oak. It presents a superb
perfume of cedar- violets- lavender- smoked meat- game-
black raspberry- and blueberry. This leads to a
voluptuous- velvety-textured- layered- super
concentrated Shiraz in perfect balance with
well-concealed tannins and a 60-second- pure finish.
Give it 6-8 years and drink it through 2035."
Wine Spectator
95 - "Big but graceful. Offers a plush mouthful of ripe
cherry, blackberry, pomegranate and cardamom, mingling
beautifully on the rich, expressive finish. The tannins
are beautifully integrated and refined, but definitely
worth cellaring to soften. Shiraz. Best from 2010
through 2020." Score: 95. —Harvey Steiman,
October 15, 2007
Wine Enthusiast 95 -
"From vines planted in 1893, this wine
combines spicy complexity with size and
ultraconcentrated fruit. It tips the scales at 16%
alcohol, but wears it well, hiding it under hints of
licorice and subtle wood spice and layers of blackberry
and blueberry fruit. Yes, it’s big, but it’s not
inelegant, finishing lush, long and spicy. Terrific
stuff that should drink well from 2010–2020".
Score: 95. —Joe Czerwinski, November 01, 2007. |

2000 -
95:
"Kaesler's icon cuvée is their Shiraz Old Bastard,
produced from a single vineyard planted in 1896, and
aged 22 months in 100% new French oak. The 2004 is a big
yet remarkably elegant, deep purple-coloured Shiraz
offering notes of blueberries, black raspberries, and
toasty oak, a superb texture, admirable richness, and a
long, heady finish. There is plenty of tannin lurking
beneath the cascade of fruit, glycerin, and extract.
While accessible, it is too young to drink at present,
and is meant to keep for 2-3 decades. Anticipated
maturity: 2008-2025+." (Robert Parker — The Wine
