The atmosphere is unique - housed in an old barn, there
are numerous dining rooms ranging from formal, to casual to a bit bizarre - each with its own ambiance...
the main dining rooms are a cavernous, a bit crowded, somewhat boisterous,
and others are secluded, private, formal, while a few are actual tables
located in the bustling organized chaos of the kitchen (s) - the main
kitchen and the private kitchen in the private Thad's rooms off the
incredible cellar.
Atmosphere - 3.5/5
Food - Menu is basic American steakhouse with a
basic selection of seafood accompaniments. Some token veal and
chicken dishes but this is the quintessential steakhouse. Standard fare provides soup,
salad, baked potato, sweet potato or vegetable selection du jour. Still there is an extensive selection of sides
and salads. Preparation and presentation
is fundamentally basic and sound. This is not Chicago or New York! The
hospitality and showmanship of promoting and showcasing the dining rooms,
kitchen and cellars is proud, folksy and amiable. They graciously offered tours of the
kitchens, secluded private dining rooms and cellar.
Food - 4.0/5
Wine - This is one of the most extensive winelists and wine
cellars on the continent - second in the east by their note. The winelist is 89
pages long, featuring 1100 different wines and an inventory of over 25,000
bottles. The offering is extensive although not as broad as one may expect,
but there are vertical selections six to twelve vintages deep in a large
number of most popular wines. The selections are fundamentally American
however there are is a respectable selection from France, Italy, Australia
that goes deep on many top rated premier producers - but not extraordinarily
wide. American verticals are BV Latour, Heitz, Mondavi Reserve, Insignia,
OPUS, shallow verticals of Silver Oak, Diamond Creek and others. French
verticals exist for the first growth producers - Latour, Margaux, Mouton,
Lafite including top vintages such as 1982 and even 1961 and a 1955 Mouton,
as well as DRC, and super seconds Ducru, Las Cases, Pichon Lalande, Lynch
Bages, as well as Gruaud Larose to name a few.
There are offerings from many cult wines such as
Harlan, Petrus, and Caymus Special Select. There are also many favorites
such as Darioush and Lewis. There is also a respectable selection of wine
values - more modest priced quality wines such as Gaja Ca'Marcanda Promis,
Prisoner, and Melka CJ. Lastly, there is a wine flight selection of wines by
the glass. Lastly, they graciously offer corkage for a hospitable fee. For any wine aficionado, its the worth the trip and is
a memorable experience. Prices are typical wine list 'retail' of about
2X market price. See
Wine Journal Review.
